HomeGuide · After you apply
What happens after you apply to YC
You pressed submit. Now what? This guide walks through the Y Combinator application process from the confirmation email to the decision, what changes if you apply after the deadline, and what to do if the answer is no. Every step is taken from YC’s own pages, linked inline.

The process, step by step (Winter 2027)
| Step | What happens | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Submit | On time means by Monday, November 2, 2026, 8:00 pm PT (11:00 pm ET). One application per batch. | Apply page, FAQ |
| 2. Confirmation | An email with a copy of your application arrives when you submit. | FAQ |
| 3. Review | The application is read as submitted; you can’t keep editing it. Material changes go in as an update. | FAQ |
| 4. Interview invite | Promising teams are invited to interview, mostly by video, in November and December. | Apply page |
| 5. Interview | About 10 minutes on Zoom with 2 to 3 partners who have your application open. All founders attend. | Interview guide |
| 6. Decision | Usually the same day as the interview. On-time applicants hear by December 11, 2026. | Apply page |
| 7. Funding | YC invests as soon as you are accepted, without waiting for the batch, which runs January to March in San Francisco. | Apply page |
Right after you submit
- Look for the confirmation email. It includes a copy of your application. Check spam too. If it never arrives, YC’s FAQ says you most likely haven’t submitted: go to your account page, choose Edit Application, and press submit at the bottom.
- Don’t plan on edits. Once submitted, the application enters review and can’t be edited continuously. A real change, like a co-founder joining or leaving, goes in as an update.
- One application per batch. If your team has two ideas, YC suggests picking your favorite. The form also asks about other ideas you considered, so list the rest there (see every application question).
Applying after the deadline
Missing the on-time deadline is not the end. YC’s FAQ treats anything submitted after the deadline as a late application and says it does its best to keep reading them. Its advice if you are ready: apply now rather than wait for the next batch, because it funds many companies that apply late every batch.
- No promised date. On-time applicants get a specific reply date; late ones don’t, because YC reviews them when it has time. The FAQ says most late applications get a decision within a month, with no guarantee.
- Everyone hears back. If you applied late and haven’t heard, YC says it is still working on it, and that it responds to everyone who applies.
- No exceptions. YC won’t mark a late application as on time, whatever the reason. Submit as soon as you can.
- Thinking further ahead? Students can apply now for a later batch through Early Decision; see how to get into YC.
If you’re invited to interview
The interview is a short conversation, not a pitch. YC’s interview guide says partners do two things: ask questions and look at what you have built. It also advises against heavy rehearsal and says the best edge is progress between applying and interviewing: launch, improve the product, grow revenue. Keep your key metrics written down where you can see them, and expect that numbers you state may be checked afterwards. Our YC interview questions guide lists what partners commonly ask.
If you’re not invited
YC doesn’t give feedback to teams it doesn’t interview. In “Why didn’t my group get an interview?”, it explains why: a batch has a fixed number of places, the median application is usually pretty good, and most applications below the cutoff aren’t rejected for anything specific. They are pushed down by a few that stood out. A no is not a grade on your idea.
If you interview and aren’t accepted
Teams that interview get feedback. The interview guide says teams not selected receive it by email, and that it is very common to take that feedback, reapply for the following batch and get in.
Reapplying
- It’s normal. According to the FAQ, about half the companies in a typical batch applied more than once before being accepted, and YC strongly encourages reapplying.
- Show what changed. Progress since the last application is a strong signal. The form asks what changed if you applied before with the same idea, or what you learned if you pivoted.
- Start a new application. You can see past applications from your account page but must fill out a new one each time. Recommendations from a previous application carry over.
What to do while you wait
Our suggestions, based on the interview guide’s advice to keep making progress.
Keep building.
Ship something, talk to users, get a first customer. That progress is what you will talk about if you are invited.
Write down your numbers.
Users, growth, revenue, retention, each with a date, so you can answer follow-ups without guessing.
Have a demo ready.
Software loaded and ready to screen-share, hardware on hand, or a demo video if neither works.
Re-read your application.
Partners will have it open. Be ready to explain any answer in a sentence or two; a free review can show which ones are unclear.

Common questions
How long does YC take to respond to an application?
For on-time Winter 2027 applications, YC’s apply page says you will get a decision by December 11, 2026. For late applications YC gives no date; its FAQ says most get a decision within a month, but it can take longer.
Does YC accept late applications?
Yes. YC’s FAQ says it keeps reading applications submitted after the deadline and funds many companies that apply late every batch. It won’t mark a late application as on time, so submit as soon as you can.
How do I know my YC application was submitted?
YC emails a confirmation with a copy of your application when you submit. If it isn’t in your inbox or spam folder, the FAQ says you probably haven’t submitted yet: open Edit Application from your account page and use the submit button at the bottom.
Can I edit my YC application after submitting it?
Not freely. YC’s FAQ says a submitted application enters review, so continuous editing isn’t allowed. If something material changes, such as a co-founder joining or leaving, YC asks you to submit an update.
Will YC tell me why I wasn’t invited to interview?
No. YC’s FAQ says it only gives feedback to teams it interviews. Its explanation is that there is often no specific reason: many good applications are simply pushed below the cutoff by a few exceptional ones.
What percentage of YC applicants get an interview?
YC doesn’t publish an interview rate that we could find. The figure it does publish is an acceptance rate of about 1%, on its investors page. We don’t estimate numbers YC hasn’t published.
Can I reapply to YC after being rejected?
Yes. The FAQ says about half the companies in a typical batch applied more than once before being accepted, and that progress since your last application is a strong signal. You fill out a new application each time.
